Stealing is a quick way to earn a ton of Gold if you don’t get caught and one of the more exciting things that you can do is execute your very own heist.
This involves entering The Counting House, which is pretty much a bank in Baldur’s Gate, and making your way to the vault floor.
There will be a ton of items for you to loot but this may require stealth and cunning to take the riches stored there for yourself.
How To Gain Access To The Counting House Vaults?
Once you make your way inside of The Counting House, speak with Head Clerk Meadhoney and this will give you two options to get a pass that leads down to the vaults.
You can pass an Ability Check to learn about Minsc, which is part of the Aid The Underduke and The High Harper quests, resulting in you getting a Bank Pass.
The Bank Pass will allow you to make your way down to the vaults and safes, which you may now loot after you have reached and lockpicked them.
Disabling The Counting House Vault Room Traps
Once you head down to The Counting House Vaults, you will find a room filled with vaults on the first door to your left.
When you are inside the rooms, there will be two spots that will force you back to the entrance, which are traps that have been set to keep you out.
You may use ranged attacks to shoot the buttons on each side of the wall between both circular traps and this will prevent you from being teleported out of the room.
The following are the locations of each of the keys, but you can also use Thieves’ Tools to lock pick each of the vaults:
- Vault Key 1 –Captain Grisly (The Blushing Mermaid)
- Vault Key 2 –Oloric Witmirth (Elfsong Tavern)
- Vault Key 3 – Alan Alyth (Elfsong Tavern)
- Vault Key 4 – Roger Highberry (Highberry’s Home)

Enter The Counting House – Vaults doesn’t just mean that there are vaults, you can also find Safes in the room to the right, which are pretty much just smaller versions of the vaults.
These are, however, blocked by metal gates that cannot be opened, leaving you to make use of other ways to get through.
This is easy as there are tons of spells and even items that you can use to get to the other side of these metal barriers.
The following are some of the best ways to get through but not all:
- Misty Step
- Arrow of Transposition
- Gaseous Form
- Fly

How To Open High Security Vaults?
To get inside the High Security Vault room,, you will first need to step on the pressure plates and the code will be 1-3-5-6 as hinted in a book called Flintdigger’s Abridged Dwarven History.
Reaching the High-Security Vaults for the first time will trigger a cutscene where you end up fighting the Stone Lord’s minions after they have robbed the large vault.
After the fight, you can freely roam the area and begin taking a crack at the vaults by lockpicking them or searching for the keys that open them.
The following are the keys to and where to get them, which are specific to each High Security Vault in the area:
- High Security Vault 1 – Display Case (Ramazith’s Tower)
- High Security Vault 2 – Lady Jannath (Lady Jannath’s Estate)
- High Security Vault 3 – Cazador’s Sarcophagus (Cazador’s Dungeon)
- High Security Vault 4 – Opulent Chest (Water Queen’s House)
- High Security Vault 5 – Safe (Wyrm’s Rock Fortress)
- High Security Vault 6 – Opulent Chest (Iron Throne)
- High Security Vault 7 – Nine-Fingers Keene (Guildhall)
- High Security Vault 8 – Jewelry Box (Cloister of Sombre Embrace)
- High Security Vault 9 – Rakath Glitterbear (The Counting House)
Verdict
Getting your hands on all the loot inside the vaults and safes within The Counting House can be tedious if you don’t have a member who can use Thieves’ Tools efficiently.
If you intend to find the keys, it may be best to come back later for the rest of the loot unless you decide to pick the locks instead.
There is a lot of loot hidden in The Counting House and some of them are worthy of replacing some of your equipment to better prepare you for the future battles that lie ahead.
