During your early exploration of the Shadow-Cursed Lands, you may run into a man who goes by the name “He Who Was” and find him with the body of a dwarf.
It is revealed that the dwarf had betrayed her friends, which led to their death as she fled from the Dark Justiciars who she gave up.
This mysterious man seeks to punish Madeline even after her death and will do so by first obtaining her ledger, but he will need you to assist him.
Where To Find Madeline’s Ledger?
Madeline’s Ledger may be found in The Waning Moon, which is located near the Road to Baldur’s Gate and Moonrise Towers.
Entering The Waning Moon will result in an encounter with Thisobald Thorm and after that, you will be able to find the ledger by interacting with the Loose Planks.
The Loose Planks will often appear after a Perception Check but may be accessed even without them by approaching and interacting with them.
How To Judge Madeline?
Upon arriving with the ledger, He Who Was will already know you have it and will wait for your response before starting his ritual.
Once it begins, Madeline’s spirit will be placed into the body of He Who Was and you will be the one who judges her.
Madeline will try to explain yourself and you may choose which response you prefer to judge her, which will have certain outcomes.
Choosing to shame her for what she has done (option 1) or to call her a coward (option 2) will result in the satisfaction of He Who Was.
If you choose to not judge her, He Who Was will become angry and this will result in him turning hostile towards your party.
Reward For Helping He Who Was
If you choose one of the first two options, which are meant to rightfully punish Madeline, you will end up receiving the Raven Gloves.
The Raven Gloves (Rare Gloves) allow its wearer to summon a Raven called Quothe, which uses the Rend Vision attack to blind your enemies.
Verdict
Madeline may have been following orders but because of her actions, her friends were forced to kill themselves, a result of her cowardice.
Punishing Madeline is the only way for you to get the Raven Gloves and such an action gains approval for some companions such as Shadowheart and Astarion.
Should you decide to spare Madeline from her judgment or forgive her, you will end up fighting He Who Was and won’t get much loot. (You won’t get the Raven Gloves either)
