Hag’s Bane is a popular item used to counter a hag’s ability to consume and turn a child into a younger hag, which had been a problem in the land of Prismeer.
Fortunately, the recipe for this is still accessible and known to some, which gives those who learn it the ability to force hags to disgorge children that they have eaten.
This will be needed if you intend to save Vanra, who happens to be kidnapped and consumed by Auntie Ethel in Act III.
How To Unlock Hag’s Bane Recipe?
The Hag’s Bane Recipe can be unlocked by accessing the Safe in Old Garlow’s Place, which you eventually stumble upon if you do the Help the Hag Survivors quest.
Once you read the Tear-Stained Journal, the recipe will be unlocked, and you will be able to craft Hag’s Bane once you have all the ingredients.
How To Craft Hag’s Bane?
With the recipe unlocked, you may craft Hag’s Bane in the Alchemy Menu (Accessible from inventory) and craft it with the following materials:
- 1x Ashes of Dried Fey Flower
1x Any Essence
Where To Get Hag’s Bane Ingredients?
Ashes of Dried Fey Flower can be obtained from the same Safe that you opened to get the Tear-Stained Journal.
By Act III, you should already have different Alchemy Items to use as an Essence, which mainly makes looting the safe the only thing you need to do to complete the recipe.
Hag’s Bane Uses
Hag’s Bane is intentionally mad to force hags to vomit after they have eaten a child, which is described in the Tear-Stained Journal.
You will need Hag’s Bane to complete the Save Vanra quest, as this is the only way to help Vanra escape before you deal with Auntie Ethel.
Using Hag’s Bane on Auntie Ethel may be done by throwing the potion at her, which will start a cutscene where she vomits, releasing Vanra. (This can be done in and out of battle)
This also includes throwing Hag’s Bane at Captain Grisly since she is Auntie Ethel in disguise, which you can do at The Blushing Mermaid.
Verdict
It is recommended to complete the Help The Hag Survivors quest during or before taking on the Save Vanra quest as Hag’s Bane is necessary for Vanra to survive.
You can use Hag’s Bane at any time, including in a fight against Auntie Ethel but it is better to do this in The Blushing Mermaid since fighting her in her lair may result in her making copies of herself.
Throughout the game, you will only be able to get Ashes of Dried Fey Flower once in the game, giving you only one shot to force Auntie Ethel to vomit up Vanra. (So make it count!)
