BG3: Mystic Carrion Location & How to Kill Him

Heading to Philgrave’s Mansion in the Lower City will have you encounter Mystic Carrion, who is a Mummy Lord that does business by employing Ghouls.

Speaking of Mystic Carrion may result in you offering your services in finding one of his minions named Thrumbo but things can turn around quickly since this zombie is innocent.

If you decide to side with Thrumbo, this will require that you kill Mystic Carrion to stop him from pursuing Thrumbo and his buddies as well as creating more undead servants.

Mystic Carrion Location

Mystic Carrion Location map

Mystic Carrion can be found at Philgrave’s Mansion, which is located to the south of the Heapside Strand waypoint.

Philgrave’s Mansion will be blocked off in the front, which leaves you having to make your way to the side to find a Stone Wall that acts as an entrance to the mansion.

Where To Find Thrumbo?

Finding Thrumbo

If you speak to Mystic Carrion and offer your services, he will send you after Thrumbo but finding the zombie minion is a bit tricky if you don’t know where to look.

After the conversation where you agree to search for the missing zombie (Thrumbo), you will obtain the Find Mystic Carrion’s Servant quest.

You can find his buddies around the Lower City, who will give you hints of where he has gone but eventually, this just leads you to the docks east of the Heapside Strand waypoint.

Once you make your way to the docks, head over to the east (Vonayn’s Home) and you will find Thrumbo inside of Wardrobe.

This will allow you to speak with him and during your conversation, he will ask you to kill Mystic Carrion, and this will start the End Mystic Carrion’s Immortality quest.

How To Kill Mystic Carrion?

Killling Mystic Carrion

Like with most enemies, you might think that charging at Mystic Carrion and attacking him until he has no hit points left will be the end of the quest but things are different.

Mystic Carrion has become immortal due to a ritual that he has done and some of this is mentioned by Thrumbo, who claims you need to find a way to kill Mystic Carrion.

Killing Mystic Carrion will result in him resurrecting after a Long Rest and you will find the zombie servants dead in the basement of Philgrave’s Mansion.

Heading upstairs and fighting your way through the enemies will allow you to reach a hatch that leads to the basement, where a book can be found. (A Mummy’s Memories)

This book reveals that there is a secret lair hidden in the Lower City Sewers, which you can reach in multiple ways. (The best way is the Manhole near Golbraith’s Home)

Undercity Ruins waypoint in the lower city sewers

Once you are in the Lower City Sewers, head north and this will lead to the Undercity Ruins waypoint, and opposite from it will be a passageway leading to the Ancient Lair.

Looting the chests or bodies as well as opening the door to where the different jars containing Mystic Carrion’s organs will cause an ambush to happen.

Several undead enemies will attack you and this will also cause you to suffer from Spell Rot (Casting spells causes you to take Necrotic Damage) until you leave.

Grab the jars with organs in them as these may be destroyed to remove buffs from Mystic Carrion, which is optional but quite useful.

Funerary Jar Form and Function book

Inside the room will be a book called Funerary Jar Form and Function, which will reveal that Mystic Carrion’s heart is contained in a jar that is inside Thrumbo.

This will allow you to tell Thrumbo that the jar is inside of him, and he will puke it out, giving you what you need to kill Mystic Carrion.

Keep in mind that destroying the jars will cause an explosion and it would be best to keep your distance when you plan on doing this.

Now that you have all the jars and most importantly the Jar of Mystic Carrion’s Heart, it is time to head to Mystic Carrion and kill him once and for all.

How To Get Mystic Carrion’s Heart?

placing Smokepowder Barrels near to Mystic Carrion’s heart jar

Obtaining Mystic Carrion’s heart can be done by following the process of heading to the Ancient Lair, reading the Funerary Jar Form and Function book, and speaking to Thrumbo.

Killing Thrumbo is another way to get the heart, but this of course means that you won’t be saving him and his buddies.

Thrumbo will puke out the whole jar after your conversation that has you telling him about the heart and you may then pick it up and bring it wherever you want to destroy it.

Easy Way To Kill Mystic Carrion and Minions

A quick and funny way to kill Mystic Carrion would be to place the jars near him and destroy them to deal damage but to make things even better, you can add a few Smokepowder Barrels.

Depending on what you prefer to place, you can cause a lot of damage since he won’t do anything until you attack or talk to him.

This gives you all the time in the world to place whatever barrels or items you want around him and the enemies in the area.

We found it useful to use Smokepowder Barrels with the jars on top of them and some Oil Barrels around for the other enemies. (We used a Fire Elemental to ignite and clear out the survivors)

Reward For Killing Mystic Carrion

If you end up siding with Thrumbo and kill Mystic Carrion, you will be rewarded with the Crypt Lord Ring (Very Rare Ring) by Thrumbo.

The Crypt Lord Ring allows you to cast Create Undead (Level 6) once per Long Rest, allowing you to create a heinous mummy to fight alongside you.

Additionally, Thrumbo and his buddies will move back into Philgrave’s Mansion and take over the business, allowing you to trade with Thrumbo.

Mystic Carrion Drops

Killing Mystic Carrion will allow you to loot the following from his body, even if you have not yet destroyed his heart:

  • Key (Allows you to open the locked doors upstairs)
  • Rusty Key (Opens Gilded Chest in the room he is in)
  • Staff of Cherished Necromancy (Enhances Necromancy Spells)
  • Torch of Revocation (Utility Item, serves as a source light and may be used as a weapon)

Verdict

Siding with Thrumbo seems to be the good thing to do and aside from the rewards and hero vibes that you get, you can also loot the items that Mystic Carrion was selling previously.

Finding each of the servants will give you vague hints about where Thrumbo is but finding and talking to all 3 of them will eventually allow you to figure out where he went.

No matter how many times you kill Mystic Carrion, he will always revive in the Philgrave’s Mansion and end up killing the zombie servants the first time you do this.
