Exploring the Underdark can end up with you finding all sorts of items and one of these is Icy Metal, which turns out to be an important component for a certain quarterstaff.
This is one of three components that have been split between a group of Drows and finding the Icy Metal and the other pieces will allow you to create the Mourning Frost.
This won’t be an easy task though because you will need to get on the good side of Sovereign Spaw of the Myconid Colony before you can get anywhere near this component.
Icy Metal Location
To get the Icy Metal, you will need to first find the Pale Corpse found hidden beyond the Guardian Gate in the Myconid Colony.
This can be found to the northwest of part of the colony and to find the body, you will have to get through the gate.
How To Get Icy Metal?
You can grab the Icy Metal as well as other loot (which includes a book called The Great Furnace of Grymforge) from a Pale Body beyond the Guardian Gate.
Gaining access to the gate can either be done by destroying it, which will anger the Myconid Colony and end up in a huge fight.
The best way to easily get through the Guardian Gate is to speak to Sovereign Spaw and accept his quest to kill the Duergar Invaders. (The Guardian Gate will be opened for you as a reward)
Icy Metal Uses
Icy Meal is one of the components that are needed to create a Rare Quarterstaff called Mourning Frost, which requires a total of 3 separate parts.
The 3 parts required are Icy Metal, Icy Helve, and Icy Crystal and these will need to be combined to create the rare Quarterstaff.
A character who wields the Mourning Frost will be able to cast Ray of Frost as a Cantrip Spell, which goes hand in hand with its passive feature.
Mourning Frost increases the damage of Cold Spells and also adds the Chilled condition to enemies that you attack.
Verdict
The Icy Crystal is one of the easiest parts needed to make Mourning Frost as long as you side with the Myconid Colony to gain access to the Guardian Gate.
The Pale Corpse found in the room beyond the Guardian Gate is a Drow named Xargrim, who is one of the 3 Drow Mages that went looking for the Adamantine Forge.
Xargrim journeyed with Filro and Dhourn but eventually, they had a falling out and Xargrim ended up unleashing a Spectator on Dhourn’s group.
