If you recall running into Oskar Fevras in Act I, this painter promised a reward after you had rescued him from the Zhentarim.
The quest called Free the Artist remains even if you have helped him escape as it continues once you reach Act III where he can once again be found.
The thing is, Oskar does not appear to be himself and just before he was about to be married, something strange has happened and you may need to save him once again.
What Happened to Oskar?
It seems that Oskar made his way to his betrothed but instead of them carrying on with their wedding, he has now become possessed by an angry spirit.
This requires that you find out what is controlling him and figure out if there is a way to put a stop to it by starting a search for clues.
Eventually, you will need to either put Oskar out of his misery or end up finding what has taken over him to finally free him.
Free The Artist Act III Walkthrough
The Free The Artist quest brings you to Lady Jannath’s Estate where Oskar said he would be heading and once you reach the entrance, you may speak to the butler.
The butler (Tarhun Mnemonis) will tell you that Lady Jannath has sent all her staff away temporarily due to certain issues and this is his way of hinting something is wrong.
He mentions that he cannot stop you from entering as he is one of the staff who she has sent away, which means he wants you to help.
Make your way to the third floor and you will run into enemies (which are mainly Poltergeists and Vengeful Souls) that you will have to fight your way through.
Head to Jannath’s Bedroom and you will find her and the possessed Oskar, who is not himself during a short cutscene.
Lady Jannath begs you to not hurt Oskar and the best thing you can do is turn on Non-Lethal Attacks to avoid killing him. (This is required to save him)
Speaking to Lady Jannath will reveal that Oskar has not been himself and that he has become worse, which results in you helping once more.
Continue making your way up and you will eventually encounter Cursed Skull, which you must get past to reach the Atelier.
This is where you will need to start looking deeper into what is happening and one of the first things you will notice are the paintings there.
Interacting with a painting will cause a voice to call out, describing or mentioning things that are related to each of the paintings.
A portrait of Oskar can be found on the ground while an Easel in the room has a painting of Lady Jannath. (Take Oskars portrait and display it on the vacant Easel)
This will open a path leading to the secret room that has a portrait of a woman as well as a letter to Mystic Carrion, who you may later head to and ask about the situation.
If you head to Mystic Carrion, he may help you once you speak about Oskar but if you have already killed him, all you need to worry about is his Torch of Revocation.
You will need to equip the Torch of Revocation and interact with the painting of a girl, which appears to be extremely cold to touch.
Using the Torch of Revocation on the painting will destroy it, unleashing the tormented spirit that now heads after Oskar in anger.
Head back to where you found Oskar and you will find him being confronted by the spirit of a woman named Kerri (Echo of a Lost Love) who is ready to attack.
It is here that you may interrupt them and decide to either let her kill Oskar, attack the spirit, or convince her to let him go.
The conversation can go in different directions but passing the Ability Checks will allow you to make the Echo of a Lost Love leave. (Her defeat or departure will cause the rest of the ghosts to die)
Once the spirit is gone, you may speak to Oskar and Jannath, who will be thankful for your help, or split up and cancel their engagement depending on your choices.
Rewards For Saving Oskar
Saving Oskar and ensuring his marriage is not affected will result in you obtaining a custom portrait painted by Oskar Fevras himself. (This can be sold for 1,500 Gold)
If you have fought with Kerri and Jannath learns about what Oskar has done, you get two rings that have different effects. (Till Death Do Us Part and After Death Do Us Part)
Should Kerri kill Oskar, you will only get the After Death Do Us Part ring and Lady Jannath will hate your guts until the end of time.
Verdict
It seems that Oskar Fevras had been harboring a secret, which was that he trapped Kerri’s soul in a painting just to clear his name or that one part of it.
Nevertheless, thanks to your help, marriage has been saved (even if Oskar may not deserve a happy ending) and a restless soul has moved on.
The painting that you get from Oskar will be identical to your character’s portrait found to the left side of your screen and can either be kept or sold for Gold.
