All Bernard Answers & Loot in Baldur’s Gate 3

Exploring the Arcane Towers will bring you to different floors once you have the power restored in the tower and while exploring, you may meet a certain construct.

Bernard is a construct who can be found in the Arcane Towers and seems to have the purpose of being there to keep the tower’s owner from becoming lonely.

Programmed to respond to specific lines, Bernard may be a friend to those who meet him or an enemy if he sees you as a trespasser.

Where To Find Bernard?

Bernard can be found on the highest floor (Fourth Floor) in the Arcane Towers and will be visible the moment you use the elevator to get there.

While Bernard seems to be the only one moving in the area, there are constructs nearby that will assist him if there is trouble.

Obtaining Books for Dialogue

Before speaking to Bernard (especially for the first time), it is recommended that you search the tower for books that contain phrases, which provide you with dialogue options.

These include the following:

  • The Roads to Darkness – Bedroom on the third floor (Allows you to become recognized as Bernards master)
  • Threadbare Book – Greenhouse on the first floor (Will allow you to obtain Guiding Light from Bernard)
  • Patched Parchment – On top of a table on the top floor (Allows you to get Potion of Greater Healing from Bernard)
  • Evil’s Ascent – Found on the second floor and labeled as Dusty Book (Provides dialogue that will make Bernard hostile)
  • Torn-Out Paper – Found in the bedroom on the third floor (Provides the option to get a hug from Bernard)

How To Avoid Fighting Bernard?

The first time you speak with Bernard will determine whether arriving at the fourth floor will turn into a battle or if you can peacefully roam the area.

There will be multiple options for dialogue but only one of them will allow you to walk freely, while the others will cause Bernard and the other constructs to attack you.

When first speaking to Bernard, you will need to select the phrase “Or art thou friend, a rescue from my lonely wake?” to have him remain passive. (Requires The Roads to Darkness Book)

Verdict

Bernard is simply a machine that has been programmed to take care of its old master, who was and perhaps still is Lenore De Hurst.

This construct had been programmed to accept quotes from plays that you can find around the Arcane Tower, making it seem that its master was fond of them.

Regardless of fighting Bernard or not, he is later found by another party, and his fate is discovered in Act III if you visit the Steel Watch Foundry.
