Certain items can be found if you look around in the Underdark and during your adventures, you may find Icy Components from different sources.
Among these components is the Icy Helve, which is a material used to create the Mourning Frost that requires two additional components.
This component may not be the easiest to come by as you may encounter a powerful enemy along the way that lives in the Underdark.
Icy Helve Location
The Icy Helve lies in the hands of a Drow named Dhourn and you can find him near the Selunite Temple although he has been petrified.
The only thing is, the petrified Drow and his buddies are not alone in their current state as a Spectator (which petrified them) lurks nearby.
Encountering both the Drow and the Spectator will happen if you travel around the side of the Selunite temple, which ends up with your party being surprised.
How To Get Icy Helve?
To get the Icy Helve, you will first need to deal with the Spectator that surprises your party and this gives it an advantage and multiple turns.
You and your party will also have to fight the Drows that the Spectator wakes up but dealing a bit of damage to the said Drows will wake them up and make them fight alongside you.
Once you have defeated the Spectator, all the Drows will be back to normal and you will be spoken to by Dhourn.
Depending on your answers, Dhourn will either attack you for certain responses or leave you in peace if you pass a Deception Check.
The only way for you to get the Icy Helve from Dhourn would be to steal it from him or kill him to loot the body of all of his belongings. (This includes a Memory Shard and more)
If Dhourn is killed by the Spectator and the rest of his mercenaries live, they will not be hostile to you even if you loot his body.
Icy Helve Uses
The Icy Helve is a component that needs to be combined with two others, which are the Icy Crystal and Icy Metal to create the Mourning Frost.
This can be done once you have obtained all 3 parts and by combining them in your inventory, the Mourning Staff will be complete.
The Mourning Staff causes its wielder’s attacks to have additional Cold Damage and will also add the Chilled condition.
Additionally, the Mourning Staff will allow the character that has it equipped to cast the Ray of Frost Spell. (Cantrip)
Verdict
Getting your hands on the Icy Helve is the hardest among the 3 different pieces required to make Mourning Frost, especially if you are not ready to take on a Spectator.
Dhourn is often the first to be waken up and if you do a bit of damage to him, he turns to your side and may end up getting killed by the Spectator.
The Spectator that petrified Dhourn and his mercenaries was unleashed by Xargrim, one of the Drow he was traveling with to find the Adamantine Forge.
