When you start your journey in Baldur’s Gate 3, you begin alone on the Nautiloid but as you progress through the first act and further, you meet companions.
Companions are recruitable NPCs that you can have join you on your adventure but sometimes you get more along the way and might want to bring another character with you.
Luckily, you can choose who will join your party and progress with the main story with the companions that you prefer to have with you.
How To Change Party Members?
Once you have more than 4 companions, any new companions that you may be sent to your camp will wait there until you bring them along.
To change party members, all you need to do is go to your camp and speak to the character to have them replace one of your current party members.
The party member that has been replaced will wait at the camp just like the previous one who will now be at your party.
How To Recruit Characters?
Recruiting characters often happens in certain ways and this is often done by speaking with them or completing certain quests with them.
When it comes to having a companion join your party or camp, finding them will often be done once you have progressed or if you explore.
You often run into Shadowheart, Astarion, and Gale during your first hours of the game and eventually find more companions to recruit.
Choosing Your Party Members
Progressing with the story does not require you to have a specific set of members in a party but when it comes to quests, things may change.
Some characters have their quests and if you wish to complete them and progress with them in your party, you can set up your party based on those members.
A good way to progress through the story and win battles would be to choose a good composition of characters, which may sometimes depend on the classes to support one another in a fight.

One of the best things in the game is that you can even change the class of each party member if you respec them by speaking to Withers.
